Incident Prevention Magazine
In 2009, a group of utility
safety professionals made
the decision to form the
Utility Safety & Ops
Leadership Network
(USOLN), whose
mission is to create a
reliable safety certification program. USOLN
members developed, implemented, and
continue to run the Certified Utility Safety
Professional (CUSP) program.
“The CUSP is a benchmark,” said Mack
Turner, CUSP, USOLN board chairman. “It
provides assurance to utilities and human re-
sources departments that employees in both
operations and safety have a certain level of
knowledge and skills so they can profes-
sionally perform their assigned duties. It also
gives individuals a sense of accomplishment
and something to be proud of.”
The CUSP program consists of two com-
ponents: a two-day utility safety leadership
review course and a 120-question exam that
consists of multiple choice and true/false
questions. The exam is given immediately
following the second day of the review
course. While the course is not mandatory,
the majority of CUSP candidates sit for the
class and most find it extremely beneficial.
Applying to sit for the review course and
exam is simple. Visit the com-
pany website to download the
CUSP handbook and application.
The handbook will help candi-
dates determine which level of
certification they are eligible for,
the CUSP Green or the CUSP
Blue. Requirements for the CUSP
Green credential, geared toward
safety managers, include three years of safety
experience in the utility industry and at least
five years in a safety position. The CUSP Blue
credential focuses on operations managers,
supervisors, and foremen and requires three
years of utility field experience and at least
one year in a safety position.
Once a candidate has submitted an appli-
cation, a USOLN committee made up of util-
ity safety professionals reviews it. Candidates
are notified of the committee’s decision by
email.
