Year-End

Vermeer

Vermeer has in-

troduced a new

horizontal direc-

tional drill with

improved power

and reliability

for the increas-

ingly demanding

projects contrac-

tors face. The

new D20x22 S3

Navigator HDD

was designed from the voice of contractors

who desire a small footprint machine that

can increase productivity when working in

urban or tight jobsites.

“Compared to its predecessor, the D16x20

Series II, Vermeer added power and im-

proved precision control for those customers

who work mainly in fiber/telecom and gas

service installation,” said Jon Kuyers, Vermeer

global product manager for underground

business.

The D20x22 S3 features 19,550 pounds of

thrust/pullback with 2,250 foot-pounds of

torque. The 74-horsepower Deutz engine is

capable of 12 percent greater power com-

pared to its predecessor, the D16x20 Series

II. All new models that feature the S3 label

are Tier 4 Final emission compliant in North

America and Europe. Units sold in lesser-

regulated countries will have Tier 4 Interim

engines.

The D20x22 S3 features a new hydraulic

system design with enhanced rotation,

thrust, and tracking performance over its

predecessor. The hydraulics increases the

system efficiency, allowing better use of

engine horsepower and helping to increase

the drill’s productivity.

The D20x22 S3 has a faster carriage speed,

which can lead to an increase in the amount

of product installed per minute. Tracking

power and speed has increased as well,

improving the drill’s ability to make sharper

turns, climb slopes, and track up to 3.3 mph

to travel to various jobsites in less time than

previous models.

HammerHead

HammerHead has introduced four new tools

to its pneumatic piercing line. The new mod-

els come in two sizes, 4- and 5.125-inch. Both

sizes are available in a Catamount reciprocat-

ing head model or a fixed, non-reciprocating

head model. The new tools are ideal for

any underground installation that requires

minimal disruption to landscapes, buildings,

or traffic flow.

Each new pneumatic piercing tool comes

with the Power Port Reverse feature. The pat-

ented quarter-turn reverse design pneumati-

cally locks into forward or reverse, preventing

accidental direction change during the bore.

The patented Debris Free Tailcone was also

incorporated to eliminate the introduction of

debris into the tool body, increasing overall

production and tool life.

“With the release of these four mod-

els, HammerHead has a complete line of

quarter-turn reverse piercing tools with sizes

ranging from 2 inches to 5.125 inches,” said

Will LaBlanc, HammerHead national sales

and product manager.

The new Catamount piercing tools, along

with the entire Catamount line, are designed

for tough working conditions in a wide

range of soil conditions. Because the tools

are engineered without mechanical springs,

contractors enjoy more productivity with

lower cost of replacement parts. They are

also easy to service in the field due to Ham-

merHead’s original tailbolt design.

Additional Catamount features include

exclusive Smart Head Technology to reduce

tool swim and increase performance, a

redesigned body housing providing better

durability and tool life, and HammerHead’s

original Clamped Rear Anvil that provides

200 percent more clamp load for secure as-

sembly. Composite wear rings also eliminate

metal-to-metal contact, decreasing wear

and sustaining performance levels. Made of

a specially designed composite, these rings

offer a low coefficient of friction and have a

higher abrasion resistance. The Catamount

piercing tools provide contractors with a

single tool for a variety of ground conditions.
