Communicating Effectively in
an Environment Where Technology Rules
7:30 - 9 am
Poor communication leads to frustration, anger, and apathy in
the workplace. When individuals learn to communicate more
effectively and respectfully, they are more productive on the
job and demonstrate more energy and enthusiasm.
Whether you are an X-gen or a Baby Boomer, chances are
the way you communicate has changed over the last few years.
From party lines to “pih” (party is here), our ability to keep in
touch has evolved by leaps and bounds. And yet, our ability to
communicate effectively has been compromised. This seminar
is designed to help people get in touch with and improve
the basic human skill of communication. It is not about
technology, but about humanology—our ability to connect at a
deeper level, be understood, and to understand.
We will review the fundamental tools to improve
communication skills and learn techniques to connect better
with others, listen with intention, and deliver an effective
message. You will learn how to:
• Utilize the three most powerful communication tools
• Identify the purpose of a conversation
• Understand the stress/communication cycle
• Develop language skills to address conflict in a productive
manner
• Focus more in a conversation to get to the heart of the
matter
• Communicate with anyone
• Have the conversations that are usually avoided
When she was growing up, Dr. Shirley Garrett could not
decide if she wanted to be Miss America, Lucille Ball, or Miss
Kitty. She achieved none of those goals, but she did become
the author of the best selling book,
A Tap Water Girl In a
Bottled Water World
. The book chronicles her adventures from
living in an orphanage to becoming a Doctor of Education.
Besides writing, Shirley is a full-
time professional speaker who
helps audiences create compelling
connections with themselves, and
most importantly, the people in their
lives and the profession they serve.
Known affectionately as Dr. Shirl, her
southern humor and common sense
approach, coupled with heartfelt
wisdom, will entertain and challenge
you.
