M

ixing a mild climate with Southern charac-

ter, Charleston is a unique slice of Ameri-

can heaven. Charleston is located in the

Lowcountry of South Carolina, midway

between Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head Island. It offers

visitors beautiful beaches, salt marshes, quaint streets,

and fortified ports. Historic Downtown Charleston sits

on a peninsula a stone’s throw from the Atlantic Ocean

and is one of the best-preserved cities in the American

South.

Set in the heart of downtown, Charleston Place is

an ideal location to explore this historically rich, yet

vibrantly cosmopolitan city. Charleston offers colorful

American history, a scenic waterfront, and seemingly

endless options for dining, shopping, golfing, explor-

ing, and carousing. It is no surprise that the discerning

readers of

Condé Nast Traveler

have voted Charleston

as the number-one city in the U.S. for four consecutive

years (and number-two in the world in 2014).

The Charleston area is a veritable living museum

populated with expertly preserved antebellum man-

sions and plantation estates, museums such as the

Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, and historic

monuments such as Fort Sumter, where the first shots

of the Civil War were fired in 1861. The city’s rich,

300-year nautical heritage stems from being a seaport

city surrounded by beautiful resort islands. The At-

lantic Ocean, Charleston Harbor, and many rivers and

marshes create stunningly unique vistas.

The city offers many ways to play—all day, every

day. You can hoist a sail or hear a ghost tale, rent a

boat or kayak, or hop out to one of the barrier islands

for sunshine, water, and beach activities. And because

this is South Carolina, the Southern golf Mecca, you

have a number of fantastic golfing options. The PCCA

Golf Tournament is at the nearby Patriots Point Golf

Course, but Charleston Place maintains a close working

relationship with more than 20 courses in the Charles-

ton area and can get you out on the links.

As Charleston has evolved over the years, it has

become more cosmopolitan while retaining its human

scale and unique Southern culture. The visual and

performing arts scene is a vibrant and integral part of

city life. Shopping is also considered an art form, with

the city earning a fashion forward reputation. In short,

you’ll find many amenities usually associated with

larger cities, but in Charleston they are accompanied

by genuine hospitality.

Charleston is world-renowned for its dynamic and ev-

er-expanding dining scene. Lowcountry cuisine is the de-

licious local fare, but the city is rife with highly trained,

world-class chefs who seek to show off their skills in all

areas of cuisine. The city’s restaurants push each other

to new heights on a nightly basis—resulting in more

tantalizing dining options for you! Or as PCCA’s Tim

Wagner said after the site visit, “The food in Charleston

is crazy good. You can walk out any door of our hotel

blindfolded and run into a fantastic restaurant.”
