L
ocated 15 miles north of Venezuela in the warm waters
of the southern Caribbean, Aruba is home to beautiful
white-sand beaches, 82-degree days, and some of the
warmest people in the world. The island is 19.6 miles
long and 6 miles across, with a total area of 70 square
miles. It is located far below the hurricane belt, and unlike
many islands in the Caribbean, the climate is dry and rainy
days are very rare.
The PCCA convention is in Palm Beach on the northwestern
side of the island, which is known for sugar-white beaches,
calm waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling, and a kid-
friendly atmosphere. Water lovers will find no shortage of
activities to dive into: sunset cruises, windsurfing, water
safaris, jet skiing, snorkeling, fishing, and more are all in
play. Red Sail Sports, a full-service adventure outfitter, is
conveniently located in the hotel lobby and will meet all your
water-adventure needs.
Many vacationers enjoy exploring the island on ATVs or
motorcycles (more information at
www.harleydavidson-aruba.
com). Sightseeing opportunities abound in Aruba, including
the Arikok Park, a wilderness reserve with more than 21 miles
of marked hiking trails; the Bubali Bird Sanctuary, a nesting
area for more than 80 species of migratory birds; a tropical
Butterfly Farm; ruins of gold mines more than 500 years old;
and numerous fascinating natural caves around the island.
Golf is a top priority for many PCCA members, and the Hyatt
Regency is just minutes from the scenic Tierra del Sol Country
Club, which features a desert course with an ocean view that
was designed by Robert Trent Jones II. Tierra del Sol includes a
full-length practice range, putting greens, chipping areas, and a
magnificent clubhouse with golf shop and restaurant.
Aruba is a shopper’s paradise, with jewelry, watches,
cameras, designer fashions, perfume, crystal, and china among
the luxury items available at excellent prices. Many stores also
feature local handicrafts. The Paseo Herencia Mall, just steps
from Hyatt Regency, is an old village-style plaza surrounded
by great Aruba shopping, dining, and a state-of-the-art
cinema featuring nightly liquid fireworks shows and musical
performances against a backdrop of a unique blend of Aruban
architectural designs and an expose of Aruban heritage. One of
the most popular shopping destinations is the Tourists Go Flea
Market, a weekend market featuring more than 100,000 items,
including Aruban crafts, souvenirs, and artwork. (We hear that
Big Daddy’s BBQ is not to be missed!)
