Weaver of KGP Logistics for a report on an issue vital to many
PCCA members’ businesses: the fiber cable market. Weaver
explained the factors that led to “the significant spike in
demand” for fiber optic cable and said that current capacity
shortages will likely last through the end of 2014. He said that
contractors should consider establishing a contract position to
secure their place in the capacity line and work with their dis-
tribution partners to forecast and establish a stocking program.
The roundtable also focused on the USDA’s Rural Utility
Service (RUS), with a talk from RUS Deputy Assistant Ad-
ministrator Peter Aimable and an Association of Communica-
tions Engineers (ACE) report from Dean Mischke of Finley
Engineering. Aimable detailed the ongoing reorganization of
the RUS Telecommunications Program, which he said aims to
allocate resources more effectively in this era of tight budgets
and short staffs, eliminate duplications and inconsistencies
in administering RUS programs, and position the RUS staff
to better serve its customers. The program now has three
divisions: Loan Origination and Approval (headed by Shawn
Arner), Portfolio Management and Risk Assessment (Peter
Aimable), and Policy and Outreach (Ken Kuchno).
Economist Mark Bridgers, Continuum Advisory Group,
closed out the roundtable with an upbeat report on the
general economy, the construction market, and the specific
markets in which PCCA members work. He said he’s as bull-
ish about our markets as he’s been in a long time, especially
the telecom market. He called gas market “still fantastic,”
he’s optimistic about electric transmission and distribution,
