ooking to learn more about their industry, make
contacts that matter to their careers, and enjoy
great times at one of America’s favorite vacation
destinations, more than 200 PCCA members
traveled to the Lake of the Ozarks in late July
for the association’s 2014 Mid-Year Meeting. And the meeting
did not disappoint. Besides the highest attendance of any
Mid-Year since 2001, the meeting featured valuable educa-
tion, prime networking, and plenty of the fun times that
PCCA is famous for.
PCCA President Steve Sellenriek selected the Lake of the
Ozarks for the Mid-Year because he wanted to share one
of his “favorite places in the world” with his association
colleagues. That same spirit of sharing permeated many of
Sellenriek’s decisions on the meeting program, particularly
pertaining to the educational sessions. The sessions featured
speakers who provide valuable work for Sellenriek Construc-
tion and whose lessons were very pertinent to other PCCA
members. Steve Chacon, of Accruit, LLC, led a general ses-
sion on like-kind exchanges of business equipment, which
can be a powerful alternative to taxable gain requirements
(see article on page 9).
During the Construction Industry Roundtable, Peter Lol-
ley, Transportation Safety Consultants Inc., detailed how he
is helping Sellenriek Construction to be exempt from DOT
hours-of-service regulations when providing emergency
repair service for utility accounts. Lolley also spoke at the
Labor Issues Committee meeting, discussing the hours-of-
service rules as well as a variety of other DOT-related issues.
The roundtable is always a centerpiece of PCCA meetings,
and in Missouri this year we had a packed agenda. PCCA
Education Committee Chair Heath Sellenriek discussed plans
for the next PCCA Project Manager Academy (PMA), January
12-15, 2015, in Atlanta, Ga. He said that the popularity of the
first PMA helped PCCA recoup its development costs for the
program, so the association has reduced registration fees for
the upcoming PMA. Sellenriek also reported that the PCCA
Leadership Development Program (LDP) continued during
the Mid-Year with a refresher course on the leadership topics
covered during the March session in St. Thomas. The next
LDP session is during the 2015 Convention, March 6-11 in
Aruba, and will cover Executive Communication.
John Hale, of John Deere and an associate director on
the PCCA board, provided an associate member report and
shared the results of PCCA’s 2014 Contractor Outlook Survey,
which found contractors busy, optimistic but cautious, and
worried about government intrusion into their businesses
and skilled labor shortages. Hale then kicked it over to Tim
