Army with a full suite of communications services, including
satellite, microwave, fiber optic, over-the horizon, radio, and
wireless capabilities, as well as all ancillary support services.
“AT&T Government Solutions is honored to have been
awarded the opportunity to serve the U.S. Army in such
a critical capacity, and we look forward to supporting PM
DCATS for a long time to come,” said John Klebonis, AT&T,
vice president, Department of Defense Segment.
The contract with the Army is one of many that AT&T
Government Solutions has announced this year. In August,
the company was awarded two contracts by the U.S. Postal
Service to provide data network connectivity and network
security.
Under the first contract, which is worth over $50 million,
AT&T will provide data connectivity services to USPS’ retail
and support locations throughout its 50-state U.S. footprint.
With the second $3.5 million USPS win, AT&T will provide
Managed Trusted Internet Protocol Service to USPS headquar-
ters in Washington, D.C., and two major USPS data centers
in California and Minnesota.
U.S. Ethernet Revenues to Reach
$10.1 billion by 2017, IDC Says

doption rates for Ethernet services are soaring,
propelled by superior cost effectiveness, high-
bandwidth scalability, greater availability, and
overall flexibility for connecting to cloud and
datacenter virtualization applications. According to new a
forecast from International Data Corporation (IDC), total U.S.
Ethernet revenue will increase from $6.2 billion in 2013 to
$10.1 billion in 2016.
Enterprises across all major verticals are utilizing Ethernet
services for domestic and international wide area network
(WAN) and metro area connectivity, as well as for access to
other services, such as connecting to the internet, IP VPNs,
and cloud service providers. The primary drivers of Ether-
net adoption among U.S. enterprises are high-bandwidth
applications, such as datacenter inter-connectivity, disaster
recovery/business continuity, and data storage replication.
Enterprises rank security as one of the most important fea-
tures of Ethernet, followed by access to IP VPN, and service
monitoring and reporting.
“Today Enterprises are increasingly utilizing 100Mb, Gigabit,
10 Gigabit, and even some 40 Gigabit Ethernet services for
their domestic and international WAN networking,” said Nav
Chander, research manager, United States Enterprise Commu-
nication Services. “We are also seeing a lot of U.S. enterprises
upgrading their Ethernet bandwidth and adding more applica-
tions and business locations on net because of the econom-
ics and faster time-to-service compared to the alternatives.
Together, these trends will enable enterprises to converge their
communication platform requirements with Ethernet.”
Additional findings from IDC’s research include the following:
• E-Line services make up slightly less than half of Ethernet
services revenue at present.
• The Ethernet access market will maintain growth rates
above 21 percent during the forecast period driven by
growth in mobile backhaul, IP VPN, dedicated internet ac-
cess services, and Ethernet VPN to cloud service providers.
• Implementation of high bandwidth Ethernet connectivity
between datacenters is one of the fastest growing require-
ments among enterprises.
• More medium-sized enterprises are also adopting Ethernet
as they migrate to VoIP, employ storage networking, and
access cloud-based services.
The IDC study, “U.S. Carrier Ethernet Services 2013-2017
Forecast,” analyzes the U.S. enterprise Ethernet services mar-
ket. In addition to discussing key trends, it forecasts Ethernet
ports/circuits and revenue through 2017.
More Than 75% of U.S.
Households Get Broadband at Home
N
ew consumer research from Leichtman Research
Group, Inc. (LRG) found that about 78 percent
of U.S. households get a broadband internet
service at home. Broadband now accounts for 94
percent of all households with internet service at home, an
increase from 92 percent last year, 75 percent in 2008, and 33
percent in 2004.
Overall, 83 percent of households get an internet service at
home, and 55 percent of adults access the internet on a smart-
phone. While the percentage of households getting internet
service at home is similar to last year, those accessing the
internet on a smartphone increased from 44 percent last year.
These findings are based on a telephone survey of 1,304
households throughout the United States as part of a new
LRG study, “Broadband Access & Services in the Home
2013.” This is LRG’s eleventh annual study on this topic.
Other related findings include:
• 9 percent of all households get broadband but do not
subscribe to a multi-channel video service, compared to 8
percent the past two years.
