S
teeped in American his-
tory and Southern charm
and hospitality, Savannah,
Ga., was an ideal host
for PCCA’s 2012 Mid-Year
Meeting, September 19-22. The more
than 150 PCCA members, family, and
friends who convened in Savannah for
top-flight education, important business,
and prime networking were also treated
to engaging tours, fantastic river views,
amazing local cuisine, and the wonder-
fully fun times that are a part of every
PCCA event.
On the meeting’s first night, PCCA
President Tommy Muse and his wife,
Brenda, welcomed members to the
Westin Savannah Harbor at an evening
reception on the banks of the Savannah
River. As the sun sank and enormous
cargo ships cruised past, PCCA members
chatted with old friends, met new folks,
and munched on delicious regional deli-
cacies like shrimp and grits and pecan
pralines.
The Mid-Year’s first full day featured
a bit of inspiration followed by a lot of
exploration, first in the classroom and
then on the golf course and all around
Savannah. The inspiration was supplied
by Jim Morris whose amazing journey
from high school science teacher to
baseball’s Major Leagues was the prem-
ise for the blockbuster film
The Rookie
starring Dennis Quaid. Morris’ story
is a baseball story, but it’s also a story
about dreams—having them, believing
in them, and following through on them.
Morris had a lot of “dream killers” in his
life, but he eventually learned to ignore
them and to believe in himself.
The exploration portion of the day be-
gan with a well-attended general session
on leading and developing the next gen-
eration. Led by FMI’s Andy Patron, the
session looked at ways company leaders
can best develop talent through effective
listening, asking the right questions, and
providing effective feedback. Participants
also discussed differences between the
different generations and how to best
attract and retain employees from each
group.
Further exploration took place during
the PCCA Golf Tournament at the Club
at Savannah Harbor (where a nice-
sized gator popped up occasionally for
cellphone photo ops) and throughout
historic Savannah on the
Midnight in the
Garden of Good and Evil
trolley tour.
Friday morning at the Mid-Year was
all business. The Labor Issues Commit-
tee mapped the association’s strategy on
three vital issues: prevailing wage classi-
fications with the Department of Labor’s
Wage and Hour Division, recent changes
to the FCC’s Universal Service Fund and
Intercarrier Compensation system, and
the Department of Transportation hours
of service rules during emergency utility
work. PCCA’s Marketing/Membership
