Agriculture Department Announces
Funding to Strengthen Rural Electric Grid
T
he U.S. Department of Agriculture made
announcements in June and July regarding
funding for rural electric projects to provide re-
liable, affordable electricity for rural residents.
USDA remains focused on carrying out its
mission, despite what it called “a time of significant budget
uncertainty.”
“Funding for rural electric utilities is part of our ‘all-of-the-
above’ strategy to support development of energy from a va-
riety of renewable resources. USDA’s support of rural electric
utilities’ deployment of smart grid technologies will increase
efficiencies, reliability, and bring more jobs to rural America,”
said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.
The two announcements include more than $544 million
in loan guarantees to upgrade rural electric infrastructure,
including more than $33 million in smart grid funding. The
funding will help finance the construction of more than 3,400
miles of new or improved electric line.
