in the former category. Its unique shaft-within-a-pipe design
features a strong, hex-shaped rod that turns inside an outer
pipe. The inner hex shaft works as a mechanical motor that
drives the bit during the bore; the outer pipe thrusts the bit
forward, steers the drill string, and works to transmit full
machine torque during backreaming. Most bores are ac-
complished with minimal drilling fluid flow, reducing jobsite
cleanup time and expense.
A dual-pivot drill frame allows for steeper entry angles
without raising the tracks off the ground. This improves
machine stability and keeps the operator’s station level. The
machine’s assisted-makeup feature automatically adjusts car-
riage thrust speed with rotation when making up and break-
ing out drill pipe, which minimizes wear on pipe threads and
extends the life of the drill pipe.

or more than 34 years, Pittsburgh Pipe and its
employees have dedicated themselves to the un-
derground utility construction industry by supply-
ing high-quality duct, utility boxes, steel casing,
telecom, and electrical supplies to utility contractors across
the nation. In 2008,
Pittsburgh Pipe built a
state-of-the-art fabri-
cation facility manu-
facturing steel casing pipe in custom sizes up to 100-inches
OD for utility projects. More recently, the company added
the capability to supply RUS-approved fiber optic cable with
delivery capabilities of six weeks after receipt of order.

hen contractors encounter cobbles and
rocky conditions and need a successful
bore the first time out, the bit they want
at the end of their drill stem is Melfred
Borzall’s new Iron Fist.
The contoured design and carbide cutters make the Iron
Fist ideal for cobblestone conditions. The main carbide cut-
ters in front are positioned to allow the operator to “rock”
the bit through rock and cobble. Balanced, compact cutters
facilitate downhole stability and are less likely to hang up on
cobbles. Cutters are strategically placed to protect the edges
of the steer face. The Iron Fist features wrench flats for easy
removal, a built-in check valve, and 1/4-inch recessed water
holes to prevent clogging.
Melfred Borzall has more than 65 years of experience in
designing and producing tools and supplies for the HDD
industry.
