Title: Easy Ways to Improve Your Mental Health

Hi again,

Sadly, mental health conditions such as depression
and anxiety affect many older adults and are often
overlooked.

In fact, according to the National Alliance on Mental
Illness says that more than 6.5 million American seniors
suffer from depression and anxiety.

Why are these numbers so high?

* Struggles with physical health can lead to mental
health problems.

* Loneliness can cause anxiety and depression.

* The loss of mobility or the inability to do what we
could before when we were younger can lead to depression.

And there are many other reasons.

That’s why it’s so important on taking proactive measures
in monitoring your day-to-day mental health while also
doing everything you can to improve it.

Here are a few ways you can get started:

Stay Active:
Exercise is essential for both the body and mind, Brown
says. Go for a daily walk or join a senior exercise class
at a community centre or gym.

Stay Connected to Friends & Family
Spend as much time as you can with friends and family.

Not only will this give you something to look forward to
but those bonds you’ll create will help you stay focused
on the joy in your life. It will also defeat loneliness.

Socialize at Senior Centres
Connect with others your age who share the same interests
and hobbies. Consider card game nights or start a new
craft with friends. It’s a great way to keep your mind
sharp while ensuring you stay socially active and engaged.

Use Technology to your Advantage
Turn to social media platforms like Facebook where you can
interact with old friends and make new ones. It’s also a
great way to stay connected with family who don’t live
close to you.

Create a Memory Book
Sharing old photos, organizing and categorizing your
memories not only is great for the mind but wonderful
for the soul. Create a memory book for your grandchildren
and add in personal notes and trinkets.

Get a Pet
Pets offer great companionship which can eliminate
loneliness while also helping you become more socially
engaged. Plus if you get a dog, it’s a great excuse to
go walking1

Learn Something New
Keep your mind sharp by learning a new skill. Consider
taking a class such as painting, gardening or cooking.
Or study a new language!

That’s it for today! In tomorrow’s email, we’ll talk
about why it's so important to learn to put yourself
first.

Until then!
